Ingredients

  • 200gred lentils
  • 750mlwater
  • 1/2teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1teaspoon salt
  • 2tablespoons ghee
  • 1teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 4dried red chilies
  • 1/2teaspoon asafetida powder
  • 8curry leaves
  • 2cloves garlic, minced
  • 1tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped

How to make it

Step 1

Rinse red lentils thoroughly under cold water until water runs clear

Step 2

In a pot, bring water to boil and add lentils, turmeric powder and salt

Step 3

Cook lentils for 12-15 minutes until soft and mushy, stirring occasionally

Step 4

While lentils cook, heat ghee in a separate small pan over medium heat

Step 5

Add cumin seeds to hot ghee and let them crackle for 30 seconds

Step 6

Add dried red chilies, asafetida powder, curry leaves and minced garlic to the ghee

Step 7

Fry the tempering for 1-2 minutes until garlic turns golden and fragrant

Step 8

Pour the hot tempering mixture into cooked lentils and stir well

Step 9

Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice or bread
