Dal Tadka
A soul-warming Indian lentil dish finished with a sizzling spiced butter tadka. Just 8 ingredients and one pot stand between you and something deeply satisfying.
Ingredients
- 200gred lentils
- 750mlwater
- 1/2teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1teaspoon salt
- 2tablespoons ghee
- 1teaspoon cumin seeds
- 4dried red chilies
- 1/2teaspoon asafetida powder
- 8curry leaves
- 2cloves garlic, minced
- 1tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped
How to make it
Rinse red lentils thoroughly under cold water until water runs clear
In a pot, bring water to boil and add lentils, turmeric powder and salt
Cook lentils for 12-15 minutes until soft and mushy, stirring occasionally
While lentils cook, heat ghee in a separate small pan over medium heat
Add cumin seeds to hot ghee and let them crackle for 30 seconds
Add dried red chilies, asafetida powder, curry leaves and minced garlic to the ghee
Fry the tempering for 1-2 minutes until garlic turns golden and fragrant
Pour the hot tempering mixture into cooked lentils and stir well
Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice or bread
